Origin means where the rough formed. It can change the price when buyers trust that place for a look, as with Ceylon sapphire. It does not make a dull stone fine, and a fine stone from a less famous place is still fine.

Ceylon sapphire has a reputation for lively blue and for fancy colors, including the pink-orange stones people call padparadscha. Ceylon spinel and Ceylon cat’s eye have their own reputations. Those are market facts. They still have to be tied to the item. A sapphire from Madagascar can be more beautiful than a weak Ceylon stone. Compare the stone in front of you.
Tsavorite is an East African garnet. Tanzanite is Tanzanian. Calling either one Ceylon because the shop is a Ceylon specialist would be false. Our Ceylon page is about that word. This page is about the limit of any country name.
A list of countries does not help you buy. Inclusions and trace elements sometimes let a laboratory suggest a source, and sometimes they do not. “Origin undetermined” is an honest result. We would rather leave the line off than decorate a listing with a famous place.
If you need the country for a collection or for resale, ask what supports it before you pay a premium. A verbal tradition is not the same as a report.
