Look for a pure, saturated green without too much blue or yellow. Emeralds are type III gems: inclusions (“jardin”) are expected. A well-cut stone balances depth of color with windowing; oversized tables can look watery face-up.
Cedarwood oil and resin filling are traditional and widely disclosed in the trade. Clarity enhancement can improve apparent transparency. Ask whether oil or polymer was used, and prefer stones with lab reports that state treatment. Untreated fine emerald is rare and priced accordingly.
