How to read one of our gem listings

A listing is a description of one item we are offering. It is not a laboratory certificate, even when it repeats words a laboratory might also use. Read it in this order: identity, size, treatment, then the pictures.

Specifications

Reading a listing At a glance

Typical published ranges used in gemology. Specific gravity below matches our carat calculator default where applicable. (SG 4.00)

Reading a listing Gemological specifications
Identity The species or variety in the title, such as sapphire, spinel, or garnet
Weight Carat weight of that stone, not a size in millimetres
Measurements Length × width × depth in millimetres when we have them
Treatment Heated, unheated, or another stated treatment — only as written on that item
Origin Named only when we are stating it for that stone
Pictures Photos and any 360 view show the stone; they are not a test report

Weight and size are different

Carat is weight. Millimetres are size. A deep stone can weigh more and look smaller face-up than a shallow stone of the same weight. If you are matching a setting, the millimetres decide whether it fits. If you are comparing price, ask for price per carat only after you know you are comparing the same species and a similar quality.

Titles sometimes abbreviate carat as “ct”. On the page, read the weight field as well as the title. If they disagree, ask us before you buy. Do not average them.

Words that need a sentence, not a vibe

“Unheated” means we are saying that stone was not heat-treated, not that every stone of the species is unheated. “Ceylon” or “Sri Lanka” is an origin statement for that item. Clarity words such as “eye clean” mean inclusions are not obvious to the unaided eye at a normal distance. They are not a laboratory grade.

Flawless, as a trade idea, means no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10× magnification. We do not want that word used as decoration. If you see it, it should survive a loupe. When you are unsure, ask and we will tell you what we can actually support.

Pictures

Use the photos to judge color, the outline, and obvious inclusions. Use a 360 view, when the item has one, to see the profile and the depth. Screens shift color. Daylight near a window is a better check than a phone in a dark room.

A picture of a refractometer, a tester, or an inclusion is evidence we chose to show. It is still not a certificate with a report number. If you need a laboratory document for insurance, say so before you purchase and we will tell you what exists for that stone.

Educational / market education only. This page is not a certified laboratory report insurance appraisal or formal valuation for legal or customs purposes. Always confirm treatment and origin with documentation.
