Seylan Gems & Jewelry
Ceylon is the historic name of Sri Lanka, and it is still the name collectors use for gems from that island. On our pages it is an origin statement about the item in front of you. It is not a synonym for “fine” and not a synonym for “blue.”
Specifications
Typical published ranges used in gemology. Specific gravity below matches our carat calculator default where applicable. (SG 4.00)
| Ceylon | Historic trade name for Sri Lanka as a gem source |
|---|---|
| What it is not | Not a clarity grade, not a brand of color, not a treatment |
| Classic association | Sapphire and spinel are the stones most buyers mean; other species occur too |
| Look | Often described as bright rather than inky; brightness is not proof of origin |
| Proof | A place name needs a basis: the dealer’s source records or a laboratory origin opinion |
| Our shop | Sherman Oaks, California. We ship to the United States and Canada |
A light, lively blue sapphire is often called a Ceylon blue even when the speaker has not established the country. That habit is how origin words get diluted. We use Ceylon or Sri Lanka when we are naming the source of that stone, not when we are complimenting the color.
Other sources produce overlapping colors. Madagascar, Myanmar, and older Kashmir material can sit near Ceylon blues. Color overlap is why a photograph cannot prove a country. Inclusions and trace-element work are how laboratories form an origin opinion, and even then the opinion is an opinion, sometimes stated with a level of confidence.
Origin changes the market because collectors compare like with like. An unheated sapphire with a credible Ceylon origin is not the same offer as a heated sapphire of an unstated origin, even if the photos look close. Price should follow the whole sentence: species, color, size, treatment, and origin — each only as far as it is actually known.
If a listing leaves origin off, that is allowed. Unknown is more honest than a guess. Do not fill the blank with a hope.
The stones can be from Sri Lanka. The company selling them to you is Seylan Gems & Jewelry, LLC., in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles. Shipping for the shop is the United States and Canada. A Ceylon origin does not mean the parcel ships from Colombo, and it does not mean a third country’s shop is involved.
Ask us what supports the origin line on a stone you care about. If the support is our supply record rather than a laboratory origin opinion, we should be able to say that plainly.
