Seylan Gems & Jewelry
Sinhalite is a rare borate mineral named for Sinhala, the old name tied to Ceylon. Most stones are brownish yellow, golden brown, or greenish brown. It is a collector’s gem more than a standard jewelry color, which is why the species name has to be right.
Specifications
Typical published ranges used in gemology. Specific gravity below matches our carat calculator default where applicable. (SG 3.00)
| Hardness (Mohs) | About 6.5–7 |
|---|---|
| Refractive index | About 1.668–1.707 |
| Optic character | Doubly refractive, birefringence about 0.038 |
| Specific gravity | About 3.48 |
| Chemistry | Magnesium aluminum borate |
| Lustre | Vitreous |
Peridot is greener and is olivine. Zircon is denser and, in the high type, has a higher refractive index and more fire. Chrysoberyl is harder. A brownish yellow stone with strong doubling can be any of several species until someone measures it.
If our listing says sinhalite, that is a species claim. This page cannot confirm a particular item. Ask us what the identification rests on.
Color, transparency, size, and cut. Sinhalite is rarely large and clean. A small lively stone can be the right one. Do not pay a sapphire price for a brown stone because the name is unfamiliar, and do not dismiss it as “just brown” if the species is documented.
Hardness is modest. Set it where it will not meet a daily work surface. We do not attach luck, planets, or healing to it.
It is strongly associated with Ceylon, which is why the name exists. A listing that states origin should still say what that statement is based on.
The tool covers the common jewelry species. Use the listed carat weight. A rough check needs specific gravity near 3.48, not the sapphire default of 4.00.
