Padparadscha sapphire buyer’s guide

Padparadscha is a sapphire whose color sits between pink and orange, without a brown mask that dulls it. Ceylon is the source the name grew up with. The word on a title is not, by itself, a grade.

Why two stones with the same word can differ

Laboratories do not draw the pink-orange boundary in exactly the same place. One report may say padparadscha and another may say pinkish orange sapphire for a similar face-up color. Read the color description and the treatment, not only the headline.

Beryllium diffusion can create or strengthen this kind of color. It is a treatment, and it belongs in the listing if it is known. An unheated stone with a report that supports the color is a different purchase from a diffused stone at a lower price.

How to look at it

Daylight and indoor light. A stone that goes brown in one of them is not the color the name is trying to describe. Check millimetres. These stones are often small. A low carat weight can still be the right stone if the color is clean.

Durability is sapphire: hardness 9. The premium is the color and the treatment story, not a softer mineral.

Questions

Is padparadscha a separate mineral?

No. It is sapphire, which is corundum. Ruby is the red variety. Padparadscha is a color description inside sapphire.

Does every pink-orange sapphire qualify?

No. Brown, dull, or strongly treated colors are often rejected by laboratories even when a seller likes the word. Ask what the description is based on.
