Buyer's Guide

Frequently Asked Questions

Natural (unheated) gems are entirely untreated — their color and clarity are exactly as formed by nature. Heated gems have been carefully heat-treated to enhance color or clarity, which is a widely accepted and permanent industry practice. Unheated stones typically carry a premium and are certified accordingly.
Carat (ct) is a unit of mass — 1 carat equals 0.2 grams. Because different gem species have different densities, two stones of equal carat weight can appear slightly different in size. Always check both the carat weight and millimetre dimensions when purchasing.
For high-value purchases, look for reports from internationally recognised labs such as GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGL (American Gemological Laboratories), or GRS (Gem Research Swisslab). These reports confirm the species, origin, and treatment status of a stone. We include a certificate scan in every product listing.
Gemstones are graded on color, clarity, cut, and carat weight — the 4Cs. Color is the most important factor for colored stones. Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions or blemishes visible under magnification. Eye-clean stones (no inclusions visible to the naked eye) are generally more desirable and valuable.
Most gemstones can be cleaned with warm water and a mild soap using a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for stones with inclusions or any treated gems. Store pieces separately in soft pouches to prevent scratching, and remove jewellery before swimming in chlorinated water or handling harsh household chemicals.
